At WrestleMania 39 Saturday, a deeply personal battle unfolded as Rey Mysterio faced his own son, Dominik Mysterio, in a highly anticipated grudge match. This father-son clash was fueled by months of betrayal, with Dominik turning on Rey and aligning with The Judgment Day. Despite Rey’s initial reluctance to fight his son, Dominik’s constant disrespect and attacks on their family forced him to accept the challenge.
Dominik made a grand entrance, arriving in a corrections transport vehicle, symbolizing his “hardened” persona after claiming to have spent time in prison. Meanwhile, Rey, inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame the night before, arrived in style, accompanied by Snoop Dogg in a lowrider, paying tribute to Eddie Guerrero.
As the bell rang, Dominik aggressively charged at Rey, attempting to overpower his father with a newfound mean streak. However, Rey’s veteran instincts allowed him to counter, using his quickness to outmaneuver his son.
Dominik soon took control, using dirty tactics, including throwing Rey into the ring post and taunting his mother and sister, Angie and Aalyah Mysterio, at ringside. In a shocking moment, Dominik even threw a drink in his sister’s face, further enraging Rey.
Rey fought back with a springboard crossbody and hurricanrana, but Dominik, with assistance from Judgment Day teammates Damian Priest and Finn Bálor, regained the advantage. However, Legado Del Fantasma (soon to be the Latino World Order) rushed to ringside to neutralize Judgment Day, evening the odds.
A pivotal moment came when Dominik attempted the Three Amigos suplexes, mocking Eddie Guerrero, but Rey countered and hit a 619. As he ascended the ropes for a Frog Splash, Dominik’s interference slowed him down. He tried to cheat using a chain handed to him by Rhea Ripley, but Bad Bunny, on Spanish commentary, intervened and pulled the weapon away.
With the distraction, Rey capitalized, delivering a final 619 followed by a Frog Splash, securing the three-count for an emotional victory.
Rey’s win was not just about defeating Dominik—it was about teaching his son respect. While the rivalry continued, this WrestleMania moment stood as a defining chapter in the Mysterio family saga.
